Going it Alone with Subsidy Publishing

Not sure what I think of vanity publishers exactly. The thing is, it works out to about the same thing if you take it to an editor, it might be that they don't know any better than you do what a good book is. It doesn't necessarily mean that you won't be successful, but it costs money and it could potentially be humiliating, so you better be certain. I respect people who go it alone in any field, but you have to remember, this is not just any field. Your salesmanship and BS ability have a lot to do with subsidy publishing, maybe more than your ability to write, so if you are not confident that you can get people to believe in your work, you might be better off doing things the old way.

Among writers there is indeed a mild contempt for people who do not go the route of submitting work to editors, subsidy publishing always looks like nobody would buy your stuff, so you have to print and market it yourself. There have been enough notable success-stories (like John Grisham) to take the edge off the scorn a little bit, but the key is being certain that your work is good.

Anyway, this service has been around for a while and might be worth looking at for those of you who know that your novel is the best thing ever.
